From any food item, say, rice, wheat, pulses, vegetable or fruits, we don’t get exactly the same taste that we experienced 50 years ago. When I say this, I am sure those who are above 50 would agree with me instantly. In fact, it’s not only the taste that is missing; but the aroma and the Vitamins and Minerals essential for our health are all missing from the food we eat.
Learned persons say that there are about 13 vitamins and a few minerals most essential for the human body to work as intended. All the more, there should be a daily intake of these Vitamins and Minerals to maintain the healthy condition of the human body. When I was a child and adolescent, we used to get almost all, certainly not all, of these Vitamins and Minerals from our food. But, nowadays, the food we consume does not supply the much-needed Vitamins and Minerals. We just consume the food for the sake of eating. Neither the food we eat satisfies the craving of our taste buds nor it supplies the Vitamins and Minerals essential for the body.
Why do food
products not contain these vital Vitamins and Minerals as before? Increased use
of chemical-based fertiliser and the changes happening to the composition of
soil are found to be some of the reasons for the loss of Vitamins and Minerals
from food items.
Interestingly,
poverty is not a threat in this century as was the case in the two decades that
followed the independence of our nation. Famines or shortage of food grains
faced in the 1950s and 1960s are part of history and the present generation may
find it difficult to believe that such situations ever existed. People, by and
large, have sufficient or even surplus money and the buying power of citizens
has touched surprising heights. They buy every food they are attracted to.
Diseases due to overeating, sedentary lifestyle and malnutrition due to lack of
essential Vitamins and Minerals in the day-to-day food intake have taken the
place of diseases due to malnutrition owing to poverty in the initial years of
the Indian republic.
Recent studies on
lifestyle diseases reveal the following.
1.
Over 61% of all
deaths in India are due to lifestyle or non-communicable diseases.
2.
There are more
than 17 lacs new cancer cases each year and these are attributed to air
pollution, tobacco, alcohol and diet changes.
3.
Every 12th Indian
is a diabetic.
4.
Air pollution
causes 30% of all premature deaths in the country.
5.
More than 2.7
million people in India die of heart diseases every year – 52 per cent of them
below the age of 70.
Here lies the
significance of the Wellness industry. The Wellness concept is an evolved
process for individuals to follow religiously to achieve top mental health and
physical well-being. While the Sickness Industry focuses on corrective measures
on the human body after a person becomes a victim of a disease, Wellness
Industry focuses on preventive measures. Of course, prevention is better than
cure. Wellness industry promotes not just physical health but both physical and
mental health. It targets body-mind rather than just body. No wonder, the
Wellness Industry promotes Yoga, Meditation, mild exercise routines,
personal care, spa retreats, wellness tourism, healthy eating and dietary
supplements.
Covid-19 epidemic
was a great teacher. Among many things it taught mankind, the need to maintain
good health and immunity was well received. People reacted wisely and started
focusing on maintaining overall health. Consumers became more health conscious
than ever before. People, by and large, want to live longer and healthier.
Nobody wants to live longer with serious health issues. On the other hand, it
has become an aspiration of most people to die when they are healthy. Nobody
wants to die after prolonged suffering due to Cancer or Alzheimer’s or any
other diseases of that order.
The process
involved in Wellness is a combination of Exercise, Healthy Food and Dietary
Supplements.
